Subject: FREEDOM ALERT - City of Beloit to BAN GUNS

The Beloit City Council is expected to take a vote on a gun and weapon ban prohibiting weapons (concealed carry & open carry) in city owned or rented buildings, facilities, and locations even for those with valid conceal carry permits. Violators will be criminally charged with a misdemeanor and fined between $300-$500.

Anybody concerned about the continual and gradual erosion of our rights and freedoms is invited to speak. You do not need to live in Beloit to speak. Your rights are affected even if you do not live in Beloit, especially if you ever travel through here, work here, shop here, or could possibly move here in the future. Decisions made in Beloit to restrict your rights are also used as excuses to pass similar restrictions in the surrounding communities as well.

Your presence is important to show the Beloit City Council that you will not willingly give up the very rights our veterans have put their lives on the line to defend. It is even more important that you speak (if even for 30 seconds) during the citizen participation portion of the meeting to show (on the record) that there is opposition. If you show up but do not speak, your concerns will never make it on the official meeting minutes.

I expect the council to pass some sort of ordinance, but our presence at the last meeting has caused some councilors to consider making amendments or adjustments to the proposed ordinance. Although you may not be in favor of a gun ban of any kind, offering the Council some ways to limit the strictness of the ban could provide the council a way to serve all their constituents while saving some face with the anti-gun crowd.

All you need to do is show up, wait until the citizen participation portion of the council meeting, and then address your concerns with the City Council. You will be given 3 minutes to speak, maybe more if the Council President is in a good mood. If you have handouts, you can bring those along as well and have them distributed by handing them to the clerk. I suggest bringing 12 copies (7 councilors, 1 clerk, 1 city manager, 1 city attorney, 1 member of the media, and 1 for you).

There is a form on a cart near the entrance you can fill out if you plan to speak (bring your own pen because they mysteriously never have any pens). The form is optional, but filling it out helps ensure you donít miss your turn. Arrive early in case there is a line.

If you are interested in potentially having your comments published in the Beloit Daily News, you can email me your name and phone number at mike.zoril@gmail.com. I will provide a list of names and phone numbers to the reporter covering the meeting so he can get in touch with you if he has any follow-up questions.
