A student at Utah Valley University exercises his legal right to open carry on the campus. Police threaten him with disorderly conduct charge - despite the fact that the law allows him to do what he's doing. Why? Because people report him by calling the police on the phone.
The officer uses the argument that the student should NOT open carry on campus because then they will just change the law. Who cares if they change the law if no one is willing to utilize it? It's like saying we should not buy semi-automatic military-style weapons because then they will want to ban them. The truth is: the more a right is exercised, the more secure that right becomes.
The officer also says that people should not open carry on campus because other people might not be comfortable. The very root of the problem surrounding guns in this country is that some people have a negative association with guns. This is the ROOT of all gun control, the ROOT of all bias against guns, the ROOT of all discrimination against gun owners. The root of the issue is the negative association of guns with crime/violence/etc.
What is the best way to change that negative association? TO OPENLY CARRY AND SHOW PEOPLE GUNS DO NOT CREATE BAD SITUATIONS BY THEMSELVES.
